I still remember the sinking feeling in my stomach when I saw the smoke. It was a beautiful, cloudless day, and I was a carefree seven-year-old, enjoying my summer vacation in the pool. Our neighbors were grilling in their garage, and during a few unattended moments, the flames jumped from the grill to the walls of the garage. As soon as we saw the smoke, my parents called 9-1-1 and I jumped out of the pool. By the time we heard sirens, I had filled the family car with my most prized possessions; the entire trunk was filled with my stuffed animals!
Thankfully no one was hurt and the damage to the house was contained to the garage, but that memory, and especially that feeling has stuck with me all those years.
It wasn't my last brush with disaster. I found myself in the middle of a real wildfire less than 15 years later. And another wildfire less than a year after that. And two near-misses from tropical storms within the next five years after that! Not to mention, a whole mess of every day emergencies in-between.
I know your story is similar. Every day, families across America face all kinds of disasters. Sometimes they're little inconveniences. Other times, it takes all the strength you have to keep going.
